Narrative:

All 3 pilots had a hard time understanding the approach controller who was female. Several radio calls had to be repeated a few times before we could understand our clearance. I commented to the captain and the senior first officer on initial check in with approach that we must have a trainee controller. It took 5 calls to confirm that we were cleared for the ILS runway 27R approach. The captain is a line check airman. The senior first officer has been flying in and out of south america for the last 7 yrs. The junior first officer has been flying in and out of south america for the last 10 months and flown international for the past 8 yrs. This approach controller was the exception rather than the rule. Normally sbgr controllers are good. This situation was a surprise and a safety concern to us.
