Narrative:
We were given a clearance to land by the mtn tower and advised to squawk XXXX as soon as able for operations in the pattern at mtn, as per the washington dc ADIZ. The ADIZ procedures require that we stay on a discrete assigned beacon code until we land, and use XXXX in the pattern. My student immediately squawked XXXX, even though we did not land and take off for pattern operations, but were still 2 mi away. This may have caused the potomac ATC to think that we were non-compliant with the ADIZ procedures. I believe a more thorough discussion of the ADIZ procedures would have prevented this situation from happening.
