Narrative:

ATC cleared us to 'taxi to runway 18L.' upon reaching runway 18R, we were told to cross runway 18R and taxi to runway 18L via taxiway east. The clearance was read back correctly. The first officer was completing the taxi checklist at that time. The captain was not familiar with the taxi route via taxiway east. The airport diagram was available in the cockpit. Upon reaching taxiway F, east of runway 18L, the controller informed us that we had taxied across an active runway and to continue on taxiway F. An air carrier jet was taxiing into position and hold at the time. There was no conflict with arriving or departing traffic.
