Narrative:
I deferred an automated external defibrillator (aed) using MEL 25-17. Maintenance reported aed had a red 'X' present in status window. The second paragraph of MEL under aed states, 'may be inoperative or missing provided,' placard installed using MEL procedure. After aircraft departure, I learned that the second paragraph should have a date in the heading reading 'before apr/mon/04.' the absence of the exclusionary date led me to believe that an inoperative aed would be permissible using the relief granted by the MEL. I notified maintenance and cleared the dmi (deferred maintenance item) when the aircraft arrived.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A B737-300 WAS DISPATCHED IN NON COMPLIANCE ON A REVENUE FLT WITH AN AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) INOP DUE TO MEL DEFICIENCY.
Narrative: I DEFERRED AN AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR (AED) USING MEL 25-17. MAINT RPTED AED HAD A RED 'X' PRESENT IN STATUS WINDOW. THE SECOND PARAGRAPH OF MEL UNDER AED STATES, 'MAY BE INOP OR MISSING PROVIDED,' PLACARD INSTALLED USING MEL PROCEDURE. AFTER ACFT DEP, I LEARNED THAT THE SECOND PARAGRAPH SHOULD HAVE A DATE IN THE HEADING READING 'BEFORE APR/MON/04.' THE ABSENCE OF THE EXCLUSIONARY DATE LED ME TO BELIEVE THAT AN INOP AED WOULD BE PERMISSIBLE USING THE RELIEF GRANTED BY THE MEL. I NOTIFIED MAINT AND CLRED THE DMI (DEFERRED MAINT ITEM) WHEN THE ACFT ARRIVED.
