Narrative:
After landing, several caution lights illuminated followed by a strong smell of burning electrical components and smoke throughout the aircraft. Declared an emergency, shut down the engines and switched the aircraft to standby power since the APU was inoperative. Flight attendants suggested opening the aircraft service doors to clear out the aircraft. Accomplished this and allowed fire rescue to board aircraft for inspection. No other problems found. Aircraft towed to gate without further incident. Note: I asked for a discrete frequency because ground traffic was very heavy. Switched to altitude ground frequency but could still hear ground communicating with other aircraft. This made it very difficult to communicate with both fire rescue and my crewmembers. This captain strongly suggests a dedicated discrete frequency at iah for these sits.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A TAXIING B737 PIC HAS TO SHUT DOWN ENGS AND GO TO BATTERY PWR WHEN THE ACFT IS AFFECTED WITH SMOKE AND FUMES RELATED TO BURNING ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS DURING A NIGHT OP AT IAH, TX.
Narrative: AFTER LNDG, SEVERAL CAUTION LIGHTS ILLUMINATED FOLLOWED BY A STRONG SMELL OF BURNING ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS AND SMOKE THROUGHOUT THE ACFT. DECLARED AN EMER, SHUT DOWN THE ENGS AND SWITCHED THE ACFT TO STANDBY PWR SINCE THE APU WAS INOP. FLT ATTENDANTS SUGGESTED OPENING THE ACFT SVC DOORS TO CLR OUT THE ACFT. ACCOMPLISHED THIS AND ALLOWED FIRE RESCUE TO BOARD ACFT FOR INSPECTION. NO OTHER PROBS FOUND. ACFT TOWED TO GATE WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT. NOTE: I ASKED FOR A DISCRETE FREQ BECAUSE GND TFC WAS VERY HVY. SWITCHED TO ALT GND FREQ BUT COULD STILL HEAR GND COMMUNICATING WITH OTHER ACFT. THIS MADE IT VERY DIFFICULT TO COMMUNICATE WITH BOTH FIRE RESCUE AND MY CREWMEMBERS. THIS CAPT STRONGLY SUGGESTS A DEDICATED DISCRETE FREQ AT IAH FOR THESE SITS.
