Narrative:

Thunderstorms were scattered throughout my airspace. I received the handoff on this E145 from ZOB. From my WX display, the E145 was flying within an area of moderate to heavy precipitation in ZOB's airspace. Tops of this WX were unknown to me. No other aircraft had flown through this WX. The E145 reported experiencing severe turbulence for 1 min. During this time, a flight attendant was injured and the aircraft diverted to cmh (original destination was ind) and needed an ambulance standing by for this medical emergency. During the thunderstorm season with hot, steamy WX, it is now more common for pop-up thunderstorms to occur rather than just large defined lines. It is unfortunate that aircraft fly through them and over them at altitudes that don't keep them safe from updrafts. I do not know if this aircraft was advised of this WX from ZOB, but the E145 did have WX radar onboard. It is unfortunate that delays are publicized as ATC or user faults. WX causes the majority of delays. I'm sure that the E145 passenger would have preferred to take a ground delay on a smooth, non-jarring runway rather than 1 min of horrifying severe turbulence at FL310!
