Narrative:
While working a 'right pack high temperature message' we (myself and work mate) replaced what we believed to be the 13TH stage augmentation valve pilot regulator per the maintenance manual, but when the removed part was returned to stores in ZZZ1 the next day, the part came up as a non approved part in the inventory tracking system. We were informed by our lead technician that we had removed and replaced the right pack regulator instead. The parts appear almost identical and are in close proximity of each other. The MD88 maintenance coordinator was informed and the aircraft's right air conditioning pack was removed from service and placed on MEL. Factors that I feel contributed to the discrepancy were: the part number was obtained from an earlier shift and came up as valid part on the inventory tracking system, the maintenance manual diagrams were not clear, and due to the fact we were on an out-of-town trip the part was delayed from being turned into our stores department and this would have alerted us prior to the aircraft being used for service.

Title: AN MD88 DURING AN OFF-LINE REPAIR ON THE R PACK THE TECHNICIANS REPLACED A PACK REGULATOR. SENT TO REPLACE 13TH STAGE VALVE REGULATOR.

WE WERE INFORMED BY OUR LEAD TECHNICIAN THAT WE HAD REMOVED AND REPLACED THE R PACK REGULATOR INSTEAD. THE PARTS APPEAR ALMOST IDENTICAL AND ARE IN CLOSE PROX OF EACH OTHER. THE MD88 MAINT COORDINATOR WAS INFORMED AND THE ACFT'S R AIR CONDITIONING PACK WAS REMOVED FROM SVC AND PLACED ON MEL. FACTORS THAT I FEEL CONTRIBUTED TO THE DISCREPANCY WERE: THE PART NUMBER WAS OBTAINED FROM AN EARLIER SHIFT AND CAME UP AS VALID PART ON THE INVENTORY TRACKING SYS, THE MAINT MANUAL DIAGRAMS WERE NOT CLR, AND DUE TO THE FACT WE WERE ON AN OUT-OF-TOWN TRIP THE PART WAS DELAYED FROM BEING TURNED INTO OUR STORES DEPT AND THIS WOULD HAVE ALERTED US PRIOR TO THE ACFT BEING USED FOR SVC.
