Narrative:
During taxi, when flaps 13.8 units were selected, a level 2 flap disagree alert displayed. Confign page showed a right inboard flap not in full deployment. Cycled the flaps to zero and alert went out. Selected flaps 25 units and all indications were normal. Selected flaps 25 units, 28 units, 35 units, and 50 units with all indications normal. Crew discussion lead to belief that the airplane gave an inaccurate alert. Crew selected flaps 25 units for takeoff on runway 18. All indications normal. Transient flap disagree alert upon flap retraction. At arrival, extension from zero to 28 units as a precaution (as per volume 1 emergency book) caused a momentary alert for flap disagree but it went out. All indications normal. Normal flaps 35 units landing in ZZZ. I requested an inspection and when the mechanics put the flaps to flaps 50 units, a cable broke. Maintenance found it to be shredded and rusting on broken ends. I may have been in error to use data other than optimum for takeoff (I cannot confirm). Flaps 25 units data available by 2 computers (FMS and laptop) and coincidentally is required for contaminated runways. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated since the 'flap disagree' warning was not present at all other flap settings except 13.8 units. It was his belief the warning was inaccurate. The reporter said flap operation on landing again at ZZZ2 had a momentary 'flap disagree' warning then went out and experienced no warning when flaps extended to 35 units at ZZZ3 terminating station. The reporter said on the requested inspection, a cable was found broken and in a shredded and rusted condition but did not have any information on the cable function.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN MD11 DURING TAXI EXTENDED FLAPS TO 13 PT 8 UNITS GOT 'FLAP DISAGREE' WARNING. FLAPS EXTENDED TO 25, 28, 35 AND 50 UNITS. ALL INDICATIONS NORMAL. FLAPS RETRACTED TO 25 UNITS FOR TKOF. ON FLAP RETRACTION HAD 'FLAP DISAGREE' WARNING.
Narrative: DURING TAXI, WHEN FLAPS 13.8 UNITS WERE SELECTED, A LEVEL 2 FLAP DISAGREE ALERT DISPLAYED. CONFIGN PAGE SHOWED A R INBOARD FLAP NOT IN FULL DEPLOYMENT. CREW SELECTED FLAPS 25 UNITS FOR TKOF ON RWY 18. ALL INDICATIONS NORMAL. TRANSIENT FLAP DISAGREE ALERT UPON FLAP RETRACTION. AT ARR, EXTENSION FROM ZERO TO 28 UNITS AS A PRECAUTION (AS PER VOLUME 1 EMER BOOK) CAUSED A MOMENTARY ALERT FOR FLAP DISAGREE BUT IT WENT OUT. ALL INDICATIONS NORMAL. NORMAL FLAPS 35 UNITS LNDG IN ZZZ. I REQUESTED AN INSPECTION AND WHEN THE MECHS PUT THE FLAPS TO FLAPS 50 UNITS, A CABLE BROKE. MAINT FOUND IT TO BE SHREDDED AND RUSTING ON BROKEN ENDS. I MAY HAVE BEEN IN ERROR TO USE DATA OTHER THAN OPTIMUM FOR TKOF (I CANNOT CONFIRM). FLAPS 25 UNITS DATA AVAILABLE BY 2 COMPUTERS (FMS AND LAPTOP) AND COINCIDENTALLY IS REQUIRED FOR CONTAMINATED RWYS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR STATED SINCE THE 'FLAP DISAGREE' WARNING WAS NOT PRESENT AT ALL OTHER FLAP SETTINGS EXCEPT 13.8 UNITS. IT WAS HIS BELIEF THE WARNING WAS INACCURATE. THE RPTR SAID FLAP OP ON LNDG AGAIN AT ZZZ2 HAD A MOMENTARY 'FLAP DISAGREE' WARNING THEN WENT OUT AND EXPERIENCED NO WARNING WHEN FLAPS EXTENDED TO 35 UNITS AT ZZZ3 TERMINATING STATION. THE RPTR SAID ON THE REQUESTED INSPECTION, A CABLE WAS FOUND BROKEN AND IN A SHREDDED AND RUSTED CONDITION BUT DID NOT HAVE ANY INFO ON THE CABLE FUNCTION.
