Narrative:
Flight was cleared to taxi to runway 22R at ewr. After completing the taxi checklist the first officer reviewed the SID and the flight engineer checked his panel and monitored the #2 engine instruments due to an abnormal start. The captain taxied. Flight engineer noticed hold bars passing the side windows and questioned the captain as to whether there had been a departure runway change. Captain replied there had not been a change. Flight engineer observed signs for runway 22L directly ahead and informed captain that he had taxied across the overrun area for runway 22R. Ground control instructed the flight to stop and hold its position. Crew was rested and fed but was absorbed in relevant, although untimely, duties. Should have been backing up the captain with better external vigilance.
