Narrative:
We were #1 at the taxiway H intersection for runway 18L. Both my first officer check airman and I heard tower clear us to position and hold runway 18L. The first officer acknowledged and confirmed the clearance and we started to taxi across the hold line for the runway. We were about 10 ft beyond the hold line when I noticed an rj taxiing across the hold line right next to us and continued on to position and hold. We informed the tower we were across the hold line. It was a big surprise to her and she asked why we taxied across the line. We told her we both heard her clearance 'air carrier X, position and hold,' she cleared the other aircraft for takeoff and she then again cleared us into position and hold. The rest of the flight was non-eventful.
