Narrative:

Shortly after takeoff I smelled fuel in the cockpit. I advised tower that I would like to return to land. I did not declare an emergency since I did not consider the situation too dangerous. Apparently the tower controller declared an emergency because there were several fire trucks waiting by the runway when I landed. I found this to be even more unnerving than the fuel smell. I think the situation would have been handled better if tower had told me there would be trucks waiting, and what would be expected of me.

Title: PLT OF SMA SMELLS GAS FUMES AFTER TKOF FROM ISP. ADVISES TWR AND RETURNS TO LAND. IS SURPRISED TO SEE CFR EQUIP WHICH WAS ALERTED BY THE TWR CTLR.

Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER TKOF I SMELLED FUEL IN THE COCKPIT. I ADVISED TWR THAT I WOULD LIKE TO RETURN TO LAND. I DID NOT DECLARE AN EMER SINCE I DID NOT CONSIDER THE SIT TOO DANGEROUS. APPARENTLY THE TWR CTLR DECLARED AN EMER BECAUSE THERE WERE SEVERAL FIRE TRUCKS WAITING BY THE RWY WHEN I LANDED. I FOUND THIS TO BE EVEN MORE UNNERVING THAN THE FUEL SMELL. I THINK THE SIT WOULD HAVE BEEN HANDLED BETTER IF TWR HAD TOLD ME THERE WOULD BE TRUCKS WAITING, AND WHAT WOULD BE EXPECTED OF ME.
