Narrative:

Air carrier X and air carrier Y were on somewhat parallel headings for spacing and traffic respectively. Air carrier X was cleared direct slt and air carrier Y was cleared direct etg, diverging rtes. With approximately 8 mi lateral separation I commended air carrier Y for a 'nice job,' to which he replied 'sure thing.' after addressing other sector priorities and 30-40 seconds elapsing, I observed air carrier Y drifting north of his route direct etg. I questioned him as to whether or not he was established direct etg, and his response indicated that he was making a course adjustment and 'that should look better.'
