Narrative:

Climbing out of ZZZZ, we were cleared to FL210 and were in the clouds. We were cleared direct to tipam intersection and told to contact center. Just as we made the change, we came out of the clouds and visually saw a buildup to FL250 in front of us, we were on a heading of 090 degrees. The first officer wanted to go the right around the WX. I checked in with center and told them we wanted to turn to a heading of 120 degrees for WX. The reply was, 'I have to coordination -- standby.' we waited as long as possible and then I told the first officer to start the turn. I then called center and said, 'air carrier X declaring an emergency and turning to a heading of 120 degrees.' the reply, 'aircraft with emergency say again.' I said, 'air carrier X has started a turn to 120 degrees to avoid WX.' the reply, 'how long do you need this heading?' I said '3-4 mins.' we cleared the WX and turned slowly toward tipam. There was some more WX so we asked for direct to rokum to avoid WX. The reply was, 'unable due to military airspace.' we slowly turned towards tipam. Going in between the WX but stayed a little south of track. Center gave us an immediate turn to 040 degrees to avoid military airspace and we complied. He then cleared us on course and we complied. He then cleared us on course and we continued to ZZZ1 without further incident.
