Narrative:
The APU was inoperative. Both engines had been started using an external air compressor -- not the bottle. I was looking down when I heard the master warning. When I looked up there was a red 'E1 attcs' no margin message and the #1 engine itt was around 970 degrees C. The captain shut down the engine. At the time this occurred, the thrust on both engines was idle and both engine bleeds were closed and the packs were off. As it was getting stuffy in the cabin, I opened the good (#2) bleed, the xbleed and turned on the packs to provide ventilation while we talked to dispatch and maintenance center. At this time, we noticed a burning smell in the cabin and cockpit. I turned the bleed and packs and the recirculation fan off. The flight was then cancelled and we deplaned after performing the parking and leaving aircraft checklists.
