Narrative:
Takeoff during left downwind departure climbing engine #1 overheat light illuminated followed by a fire light and bell. We asked for and received clearance to return to airport. All lights extinguished as we began our descent. Completed engine overheat checklist. Landed overweight. Returned to gate under observation of emergency vehicles. Supplemental information from acn 629401: captain made the landing. Uneventful taxi in and shutdown followed at the gate. Great help by departure/approach control. No problems noted by this first officer as to procedures, as well as ATC control/aircraft compliance.
