Narrative:
It has come to my attention that I flew several emb jets that were not airworthy due to a missing third battery. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter was unaware that 3 batteries were ever on the aircraft of this type. He didn't know what it was for. Apparently the maintenance department discovered the battery's absence and the crews who flew the aircraft were notified of the inadvertent violation.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: 2 EMB ACFT WERE FLOWN WITHOUT A THIRD BATTERY AND THUS, UNAIRWORTHY WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE CREW.
Narrative: IT HAS COME TO MY ATTN THAT I FLEW SEVERAL EMB JETS THAT WERE NOT AIRWORTHY DUE TO A MISSING THIRD BATTERY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR WAS UNAWARE THAT 3 BATTERIES WERE EVER ON THE ACFT OF THIS TYPE. HE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT IT WAS FOR. APPARENTLY THE MAINT DEPT DISCOVERED THE BATTERY'S ABSENCE AND THE CREWS WHO FLEW THE ACFT WERE NOTIFIED OF THE INADVERTENT VIOLATION.
