Narrative:
Taxiing out for takeoff. Tower controller stated 'air carrier Z will be departing from taxiway B1. After him, taxi into position and hold, full length.' both myself and the first officer verbalized the clearance, and it was read back to the controller. When we looked at the runway, we observed air carrier Z, at the end of the runway, not at the B1 intersection. I told the first officer, 'no big deal, when he leaves, we will taxi into position.' (we thought he must have back-taxied from B1 intersection.) when air carrier Z departed, we taxied into position. When turning to align with the runway, we saw an air carrier Y B737 taxiing into position at the B1 intersection in front of us. Tower called us and said we did not have clearance to go into position. When I got to phl, I called the tower supervisor on duty in las. He said that he listened to the tapes and that I did not have clearance to taxi into position. He said no action would be taken on their part. My first officer and myself still believe we heard the clearance. We definitely heard 'air carrier Z,' and never heard 'air carrier Y' call sign.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 FLT CREW IS QUESTIONED BY ATC AT LAS FOR TAXIING INTO POS RESULTING FROM AN APPARENT CALL SIGN CONFUSION.
Narrative: TAXIING OUT FOR TKOF. TWR CTLR STATED 'ACR Z WILL BE DEPARTING FROM TXWY B1. AFTER HIM, TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD, FULL LENGTH.' BOTH MYSELF AND THE FO VERBALIZED THE CLRNC, AND IT WAS READ BACK TO THE CTLR. WHEN WE LOOKED AT THE RWY, WE OBSERVED ACR Z, AT THE END OF THE RWY, NOT AT THE B1 INTXN. I TOLD THE FO, 'NO BIG DEAL, WHEN HE LEAVES, WE WILL TAXI INTO POS.' (WE THOUGHT HE MUST HAVE BACK-TAXIED FROM B1 INTXN.) WHEN ACR Z DEPARTED, WE TAXIED INTO POS. WHEN TURNING TO ALIGN WITH THE RWY, WE SAW AN ACR Y B737 TAXIING INTO POS AT THE B1 INTXN IN FRONT OF US. TWR CALLED US AND SAID WE DID NOT HAVE CLRNC TO GO INTO POS. WHEN I GOT TO PHL, I CALLED THE TWR SUPVR ON DUTY IN LAS. HE SAID THAT HE LISTENED TO THE TAPES AND THAT I DID NOT HAVE CLRNC TO TAXI INTO POS. HE SAID NO ACTION WOULD BE TAKEN ON THEIR PART. MY FO AND MYSELF STILL BELIEVE WE HEARD THE CLRNC. WE DEFINITELY HEARD 'ACR Z,' AND NEVER HEARD 'ACR Y' CALL SIGN.
