Narrative:

Departure teb xa:20 local time on teb 5 departure. We were to maintain 1500 ft until 4.5 DME from teb then climb to 2000 ft. In spite of having read the procedure, somehow I had convinced myself we could go right to 2000 ft. Even though our duty time was 'only' 10 hours at that time, we were both quite tired from a full day's flying and it's my opinion this is what led to the lapse in situational awareness while flying the departure procedure. ATC commented we were supposed to maintain 1500 ft but stated something to the effect, '...never mind, maintain 2000 ft.' apparently there was no traffic conflict.
