Narrative:
I was flying to dkx from jzi on an IFR flight plan. (VFR on top) soon after crossing sot, at approximately pitte intersection, I saw there was excellent visibility and so cancelled IFR for the descent. Tys approach kept me on flight following. About 20 mi from dkx, tys approach asked me if I had 2 xponders. I told them no and asked why. They said there were 2 returns from my location with no horizontal separation, gave me the mode C of each. From that information I was able to tell that my aircraft was on top, so I started climbing. After conferring with approach I made a turn to 270 degrees at which point the other aircraft appeared in front of my right wing. We were both headed to the same airport, at the same speed. Without radar service, I am sure I would have descended into him since my rate of descent was faster than his. I suppose I could have flown a 'wobbly' descent or made occasional clearing turns.

Title: A PA28 NEARLY DSNDED ONTO ANOTHER PA28 ON THE SAME TRACK TO THE SAME ARPT. ATC IDENTED POSSIBLE TFC AS A DOUBLE XPONDER RETURN.
Narrative: I WAS FLYING TO DKX FROM JZI ON AN IFR FLT PLAN. (VFR ON TOP) SOON AFTER XING SOT, AT APPROX PITTE INTXN, I SAW THERE WAS EXCELLENT VISIBILITY AND SO CANCELLED IFR FOR THE DSCNT. TYS APCH KEPT ME ON FLT FOLLOWING. ABOUT 20 MI FROM DKX, TYS APCH ASKED ME IF I HAD 2 XPONDERS. I TOLD THEM NO AND ASKED WHY. THEY SAID THERE WERE 2 RETURNS FROM MY LOCATION WITH NO HORIZ SEPARATION, GAVE ME THE MODE C OF EACH. FROM THAT INFO I WAS ABLE TO TELL THAT MY ACFT WAS ON TOP, SO I STARTED CLBING. AFTER CONFERRING WITH APCH I MADE A TURN TO 270 DEGS AT WHICH POINT THE OTHER ACFT APPEARED IN FRONT OF MY R WING. WE WERE BOTH HEADED TO THE SAME ARPT, AT THE SAME SPD. WITHOUT RADAR SVC, I AM SURE I WOULD HAVE DSNDED INTO HIM SINCE MY RATE OF DSCNT WAS FASTER THAN HIS. I SUPPOSE I COULD HAVE FLOWN A 'WOBBLY' DSCNT OR MADE OCCASIONAL CLRING TURNS.
