Narrative:
On 8 mi final with severe thunderstorm, all quadrants and WX approximately 7 mi overcast, 1.5 mi visibility, moderate rain, the #1 engine indicated high vibration (in excess of 5 units) and the egt rapidly rose in excess of 710 degrees C. The #1 engine then seized. No fire warning occurred. Declared emergency, completed abnormal procedure (engine failure in landing confign) and configured aircraft for a single engine landing (F15, reference +15 KTS, flap inhibited). Completed uneventful approach and landing to wet runway in moderate rain. After landing, the fire commander thought he possibly observed 'sparks' in the #1 engine and shot retardant into the engine as a precaution. No other fire indications or hazardous conditions were observed. Elected not to evacuate/evacuation and taxied to gate uneventfully when cleared by the fire commander.

Title: ON FINAL FOR LNDG IN RAIN AND CUMULONIMBUS, A B737 L ENG SEIZED. THE ACFT WAS CONFIGURED FOR A SINGLE ENG LNDG.
Narrative: ON 8 MI FINAL WITH SEVERE TSTM, ALL QUADRANTS AND WX APPROX 7 MI OVCST, 1.5 MI VISIBILITY, MODERATE RAIN, THE #1 ENG INDICATED HIGH VIBRATION (IN EXCESS OF 5 UNITS) AND THE EGT RAPIDLY ROSE IN EXCESS OF 710 DEGS C. THE #1 ENG THEN SEIZED. NO FIRE WARNING OCCURRED. DECLARED EMER, COMPLETED ABNORMAL PROC (ENG FAILURE IN LNDG CONFIGN) AND CONFIGURED ACFT FOR A SINGLE ENG LNDG (F15, REF +15 KTS, FLAP INHIBITED). COMPLETED UNEVENTFUL APCH AND LNDG TO WET RWY IN MODERATE RAIN. AFTER LNDG, THE FIRE COMMANDER THOUGHT HE POSSIBLY OBSERVED 'SPARKS' IN THE #1 ENG AND SHOT RETARDANT INTO THE ENG AS A PRECAUTION. NO OTHER FIRE INDICATIONS OR HAZARDOUS CONDITIONS WERE OBSERVED. ELECTED NOT TO EVAC AND TAXIED TO GATE UNEVENTFULLY WHEN CLRED BY THE FIRE COMMANDER.
