Narrative:

On takeoff roll, observed 4-5 large birds moving from left to right off our nose. Before V1 speed, ingested birds in #2 engine, accompanied by explosive compressor stall and heavy yaw. Immediately rejected takeoff. Did not feel any deceleration. Elected to continue the takeoff. Went to toga power, rotated at vr, and climbed out on runway heading. Aircraft required full left rudder and some aileron as if we had lost #2 engine. Both climb and airspeed began deteriorating. First officer called out, 'right reverser unlocked.' I then immediately retarded right (#2) thrust lever. Aircraft started climbing and reacting normally. In the interim, I had begun drifting right of centerline. ATC asked if I wanted to land on runway 5. I said yes and continued turn, reconfigured and landed on runway 5 without incident. In retrospect, even though we were below V1 when we started the reject, we would probably have been better off continuing the takeoff without attempting the reject. If power on #2 engine had not been reduced, I'm not sure we would have been able to maintain flying speed.

Title: DURING TKOF ROLL BELOW V1, BIRDS WERE INGESTED IN THE #2 ENG. AFTER AN INITIAL REJECT MANEUVER, THE CREW CONTINUED THE TKOF RETURNING IMMEDIATELY TO LAND.

Narrative: ON TKOF ROLL, OBSERVED 4-5 LARGE BIRDS MOVING FROM L TO R OFF OUR NOSE. BEFORE V1 SPD, INGESTED BIRDS IN #2 ENG, ACCOMPANIED BY EXPLOSIVE COMPRESSOR STALL AND HVY YAW. IMMEDIATELY REJECTED TKOF. DID NOT FEEL ANY DECELERATION. ELECTED TO CONTINUE THE TKOF. WENT TO TOGA PWR, ROTATED AT VR, AND CLBED OUT ON RWY HDG. ACFT REQUIRED FULL L RUDDER AND SOME AILERON AS IF WE HAD LOST #2 ENG. BOTH CLB AND AIRSPD BEGAN DETERIORATING. FO CALLED OUT, 'R REVERSER UNLOCKED.' I THEN IMMEDIATELY RETARDED R (#2) THRUST LEVER. ACFT STARTED CLBING AND REACTING NORMALLY. IN THE INTERIM, I HAD BEGUN DRIFTING R OF CTRLINE. ATC ASKED IF I WANTED TO LAND ON RWY 5. I SAID YES AND CONTINUED TURN, RECONFIGURED AND LANDED ON RWY 5 WITHOUT INCIDENT. IN RETROSPECT, EVEN THOUGH WE WERE BELOW V1 WHEN WE STARTED THE REJECT, WE WOULD PROBABLY HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF CONTINUING THE TKOF WITHOUT ATTEMPTING THE REJECT. IF PWR ON #2 ENG HAD NOT BEEN REDUCED, I'M NOT SURE WE WOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MAINTAIN FLYING SPD.
