Narrative:
We just completed our cruise checks and I (the instructor) was xferred control of the airplane to demonstrate a stall. I cleared the area and then set the airplane up, pulled the carburetor heat, throttle back, etc. After the recovery, I applied full power. I started to xfer control back to the student when the aircraft RPM dropped to around 500. I immediately turned back towards the elmira airport and told approach that I lost substantial engine power. As I was talking to approach, the engine completely stopped. I set up for best glide, started looking for a field and called approach and told them I would be making an off-airport landing because my engine had quit. I attempted a restart twice, to no avail. I landed safely with no damage to persons or property.

AS I WAS TALKING TO APCH, THE ENG COMPLETELY STOPPED. I SET UP FOR BEST GLIDE, STARTED LOOKING FOR A FIELD AND CALLED APCH AND TOLD THEM I WOULD BE MAKING AN OFF-ARPT LNDG BECAUSE MY ENG HAD QUIT. I ATTEMPTED A RESTART TWICE, TO NO AVAIL. I LANDED SAFELY WITH NO DAMAGE TO PERSONS OR PROPERTY.
