Narrative:
I am a pwrplant technical advisor. While I was doing reviews of write-ups worked by the mechanics, I came across a maintenance service item on the egt system of #2 engine. I saw that the mechanics in ZZZ1 had updated the item that the egt harnesses were out of limits and needed to be replaced. I updated the item to replace the harnesses and added the parts needed to the item. I found out today that the aircraft had been flying for 30 days and the harnesses had not been replaced. I was supposed to call the aircraft down and make the mechanics in ZZZ1 replace the harnesses before further flight. I did not know this so the aircraft flew 30 days with the egt harnesses being known as faulty. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter, when discovering the #2 engine egt exhaust harness was found out of limits and was required to be replaced, entered an item for replacement. The maintenance center did not appear to have control of this item and this condition continued for 30 days before the reporter discovered the maintenance discrepancy. Egt exhaust indication is a must fix and cannot be deferred per the MEL.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A DC10 WAS DISPATCHED WITH #2 EGT EXHAUST HARNESS OUT OF LIMITS. CAUSED BY MAINT PWRPLANT TECHNICAL ERROR.
Narrative: I AM A PWRPLANT TECHNICAL ADVISOR. WHILE I WAS DOING REVIEWS OF WRITE-UPS WORKED BY THE MECHS, I CAME ACROSS A MAINT SVC ITEM ON THE EGT SYS OF #2 ENG. I SAW THAT THE MECHS IN ZZZ1 HAD UPDATED THE ITEM THAT THE EGT HARNESSES WERE OUT OF LIMITS AND NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. I UPDATED THE ITEM TO REPLACE THE HARNESSES AND ADDED THE PARTS NEEDED TO THE ITEM. I FOUND OUT TODAY THAT THE ACFT HAD BEEN FLYING FOR 30 DAYS AND THE HARNESSES HAD NOT BEEN REPLACED. I WAS SUPPOSED TO CALL THE ACFT DOWN AND MAKE THE MECHS IN ZZZ1 REPLACE THE HARNESSES BEFORE FURTHER FLT. I DID NOT KNOW THIS SO THE ACFT FLEW 30 DAYS WITH THE EGT HARNESSES BEING KNOWN AS FAULTY. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR, WHEN DISCOVERING THE #2 ENG EGT EXHAUST HARNESS WAS FOUND OUT OF LIMITS AND WAS REQUIRED TO BE REPLACED, ENTERED AN ITEM FOR REPLACEMENT. THE MAINT CTR DID NOT APPEAR TO HAVE CTL OF THIS ITEM AND THIS CONDITION CONTINUED FOR 30 DAYS BEFORE THE RPTR DISCOVERED THE MAINT DISCREPANCY. EGT EXHAUST INDICATION IS A MUST FIX AND CANNOT BE DEFERRED PER THE MEL.
