Narrative:
On a good VFR day -- clear; dry. On takeoff at cno airport; after initial power advance; aircraft suddenly made a hard turn to left; exiting runway into grass. Steering by pedal ineffective; rudder not effective; but was not up to control speed of rudder. Power was reduced and aircraft came to a stop approximately 35 ft from runway in grassy area. Power applied slowly and aircraft taxied to hangar. No injuries. Minimal damage (dent on right leading edge; recognition light broken; fan on left fuel tank bent). Have no explanation as to why. Flew aircraft on jan/fri/05 4 hours. The aircraft had not been flown in last 2 yrs; except for a check-out flight approximately 1 month ago. All maintenance and inspections were up-to-date. Everything seemed normal; until abrupt left turn from runway. All preflight and checklists were used. No discrepancies prior to flight.
