Narrative:
As a result of an unexpected increase in company action taken concerning the following event; I decided to complete this report; albeit 3 weeks later than I should have done. The event occurred at the end of the second leg of a 4 leg day. We parked the plane in rdu; read the checklists; and went into the terminal. Unfortunately; the right engine was still running. We weren't in any rush; weren't tired; or distraction. We just missed it. On taxi in; the first officer intended to shut down the engine; but didn't. During the parking checklist; I claimed the thrust levers were flight idle -- they weren't. Another crew was taking the aircraft in an hour; so we left the APU running; which somewhat masked the sound of the engine. In retrospect; the plane did sound louder; but not loud enough that I suspected something was wrong. Had we not only read; but completed the checklists; or paid closer attention to the plane; this event obviously would not have happened.

Title: AN EMJ CREW EXITED THEIR PARKED ACFT AFTER TAXI-IN LEAVING AN ENG OPERATING.
Narrative: AS A RESULT OF AN UNEXPECTED INCREASE IN COMPANY ACTION TAKEN CONCERNING THE FOLLOWING EVENT; I DECIDED TO COMPLETE THIS RPT; ALBEIT 3 WKS LATER THAN I SHOULD HAVE DONE. THE EVENT OCCURRED AT THE END OF THE SECOND LEG OF A 4 LEG DAY. WE PARKED THE PLANE IN RDU; READ THE CHKLISTS; AND WENT INTO THE TERMINAL. UNFORTUNATELY; THE R ENG WAS STILL RUNNING. WE WEREN'T IN ANY RUSH; WEREN'T TIRED; OR DISTR. WE JUST MISSED IT. ON TAXI IN; THE FO INTENDED TO SHUT DOWN THE ENG; BUT DIDN'T. DURING THE PARKING CHKLIST; I CLAIMED THE THRUST LEVERS WERE FLT IDLE -- THEY WEREN'T. ANOTHER CREW WAS TAKING THE ACFT IN AN HR; SO WE LEFT THE APU RUNNING; WHICH SOMEWHAT MASKED THE SOUND OF THE ENG. IN RETROSPECT; THE PLANE DID SOUND LOUDER; BUT NOT LOUD ENOUGH THAT I SUSPECTED SOMETHING WAS WRONG. HAD WE NOT ONLY READ; BUT COMPLETED THE CHKLISTS; OR PAID CLOSER ATTN TO THE PLANE; THIS EVENT OBVIOUSLY WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED.
