Narrative:

During taxi to runway 31 at lga; both engines running on taxiway a; holding short of taxiway V. Taxi checklist was complete. Both engines had been running approximately 5 mins. We had a caution chime message 'EICAS comparator monitor.' at this time; the gauges for #2 engine went blank. The round gauges (N1; N2; itt) were there; but had no numbers on them. 5-10 seconds later; engine indications reappeared. N1 and N2 were reading abnormally and itt was in the red. Captain then shut down #2 engine. We decided to taxi back to the gate for maintenance. As we taxied back; I asked ramp control if they saw anything abnormal with our #2 engine/right side; and they said no. As we were rolling into spot X on blast fence; we smelled a strong burning odor. Captain said to notify the flight attendant we were evacing the aircraft. I called the flight attendant and told her to evacuate/evacuation passenger out the main cabin door as soon as we came to a stop. Captain told me to go assist in getting passenger off the aircraft; to which I did; and 12 passenger were evacuate/evacuationed without injury or incident. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the tapes were analyzed of the #2 engine performance and it was noted the engine had a number of starting irregularities and coupled with the overtemp event the engine was changed. The evacuate/evacuation on the gate went smoothly and no injuries were incurred.
