Narrative:
Heavy vibration followed by strong electrical fumes. Donned oxygen and completed smoke and fume qrc. Declared emergency with center and started divert and descent. Shortly thereafter; got ECAM warning. Vent blower fault. Completed ECAM for vent blower fault procedure. Within a couple of mins; got extract vent fault ECAM. Again; completed ECAM procedures. Fumes dissipated shortly thereafter; and crew; along with inputs from dispatch and maintenance; made the decision to divert to ZZZ. Flight landed uneventfully. Taxied to gate. CRM included flight attendants; deadheading A320 captain; maintenance; and dispatch. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: it was determined by maintenance that the extract fan had failed; causing the fumes and vibration. The procedures provided were successful in stopping the fumes because they include taking power away from the fan. No circuit breakers activated.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN A319 CREW EXPERIENCES VIBRATION AND ELECTRICAL FUMES. OXYGEN IS USED; DSCNT MADE; AND EMER DECLARED FOLLOWED BY DIVERSION TO THE NEAREST SUITABLE ARPT.
Narrative: HVY VIBRATION FOLLOWED BY STRONG ELECTRICAL FUMES. DONNED OXYGEN AND COMPLETED SMOKE AND FUME QRC. DECLARED EMER WITH CTR AND STARTED DIVERT AND DSCNT. SHORTLY THEREAFTER; GOT ECAM WARNING. VENT BLOWER FAULT. COMPLETED ECAM FOR VENT BLOWER FAULT PROC. WITHIN A COUPLE OF MINS; GOT EXTRACT VENT FAULT ECAM. AGAIN; COMPLETED ECAM PROCS. FUMES DISSIPATED SHORTLY THEREAFTER; AND CREW; ALONG WITH INPUTS FROM DISPATCH AND MAINT; MADE THE DECISION TO DIVERT TO ZZZ. FLT LANDED UNEVENTFULLY. TAXIED TO GATE. CRM INCLUDED FLT ATTENDANTS; DEADHEADING A320 CAPT; MAINT; AND DISPATCH. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: IT WAS DETERMINED BY MAINT THAT THE EXTRACT FAN HAD FAILED; CAUSING THE FUMES AND VIBRATION. THE PROCS PROVIDED WERE SUCCESSFUL IN STOPPING THE FUMES BECAUSE THEY INCLUDE TAKING PWR AWAY FROM THE FAN. NO CIRCUIT BREAKERS ACTIVATED.
