Narrative:
After landing in ZZZ; aircraft was met at gate by maintenance. Crew was never informed of a problem. Mechanic stated that the aircraft required a 'right outboard wheel shim' to be installed and the part was inbound on the next flight from ZZZ1. As it turned out; the part was not on the flight and was scheduled on the next flight to arrive around XC30. After talking with the mechanic; it became apparent that this missing part could have allowed our right outboard main to depart the aircraft. Had we only flown 1 leg after this discovery; I would not have been so concerned. However; after further discussion with the mechanic; xxxxx had notified him that morning that this part would have to be installed when we arrived at XA30 in ZZZ. We now had flown 3 legs. The company could have had maintenance completed in ZZZ2; ZZZ3; or ZZZ4. The part in question was an axle lock washer.
