Narrative:

While being marshaled in on j-line toward the stop point; I slowed and stopped the aircraft short of marshaller's directions. After shutdown; I was informed by ground personnel that the left (#1) engine nacelle had contacted the jetway. After discussing the incident; I learned that the jetway was positioned further extended than normal because of airport construction and the marshaller should have stopped me further out on a temporary stop point. The marshaller was not aware of this abnormal positioning. My reason for stopping short of the marshaller's directions was my perception of continuing to move too far forward after the jetway cabin attendant passed out of view of my peripheral vision. Luckily; the aircraft damage was limited to scratched paint and a very small dent (within limits for continued service).

Title: B737-500 STRIKES JETWAY WHILE PARKING UNDER MARSHALLER GUIDANCE.

Narrative: WHILE BEING MARSHALED IN ON J-LINE TOWARD THE STOP POINT; I SLOWED AND STOPPED THE ACFT SHORT OF MARSHALLER'S DIRECTIONS. AFTER SHUTDOWN; I WAS INFORMED BY GND PERSONNEL THAT THE L (#1) ENG NACELLE HAD CONTACTED THE JETWAY. AFTER DISCUSSING THE INCIDENT; I LEARNED THAT THE JETWAY WAS POSITIONED FURTHER EXTENDED THAN NORMAL BECAUSE OF ARPT CONSTRUCTION AND THE MARSHALLER SHOULD HAVE STOPPED ME FURTHER OUT ON A TEMPORARY STOP POINT. THE MARSHALLER WAS NOT AWARE OF THIS ABNORMAL POSITIONING. MY REASON FOR STOPPING SHORT OF THE MARSHALLER'S DIRECTIONS WAS MY PERCEPTION OF CONTINUING TO MOVE TOO FAR FORWARD AFTER THE JETWAY CAB PASSED OUT OF VIEW OF MY PERIPHERAL VISION. LUCKILY; THE ACFT DAMAGE WAS LIMITED TO SCRATCHED PAINT AND A VERY SMALL DENT (WITHIN LIMITS FOR CONTINUED SVC).
