Narrative:

During the preflight; the first officer reported that both nose tires were flat. Maintenance was requested and replaced both tires promptly. No delay was encountered. The mechanics reported that both tires were fine 45 mins prior when they towed the aircraft to the gate. 2 things struck us (first officer and myself) as odd: 1) why didn't the mechanics notice the flat tires when they walked out the plane to discuss the status of the plane when we arrived to preflight? 2) why would both tires go flat at the same time?
