Narrative:
Was called back early to work final control because arrival was having difficulty keeping up with the workload. I opened the 'F' final position with a very limited briefing from the arrival controller. I was immediately given 3 or 4 handoffs; however; the arrival controller only switched one to my frequency. I descended the one I had and started working it towards the ILS final. I cleared them for an ILS approach to runway 18C; at which time the supervisor brought to my attention that there was another aircraft not on my tag out there at 4000 ft. I gave my aircraft immediate descent. Supervisor should have opened the position sooner.

Title: CVG CTLR EXPERIENCED A NEAR SEPARATION LOSS AFTER HURRIEDLY DE-COMBINING A SECTOR AND NOT RECEIVING A COMPLETE BRIEFING.
Narrative: WAS CALLED BACK EARLY TO WORK FINAL CTL BECAUSE ARR WAS HAVING DIFFICULTY KEEPING UP WITH THE WORKLOAD. I OPENED THE 'F' FINAL POS WITH A VERY LIMITED BRIEFING FROM THE ARR CTLR. I WAS IMMEDIATELY GIVEN 3 OR 4 HDOFS; HOWEVER; THE ARR CTLR ONLY SWITCHED ONE TO MY FREQ. I DSNDED THE ONE I HAD AND STARTED WORKING IT TOWARDS THE ILS FINAL. I CLRED THEM FOR AN ILS APCH TO RWY 18C; AT WHICH TIME THE SUPVR BROUGHT TO MY ATTN THAT THERE WAS ANOTHER ACFT NOT ON MY TAG OUT THERE AT 4000 FT. I GAVE MY ACFT IMMEDIATE DSCNT. SUPVR SHOULD HAVE OPENED THE POS SOONER.
