Narrative:
Leaving the FBO; we were cleared to taxi runway 31C. After turning onto taxiway K and reaching the intersection of taxiway K and taxiway F; I was confused as to which way to taxi because there was no sign that indicated which taxiway was taxiway F and which taxiway was taxiway K. While trying to ascertain which way to go; I inadvertently placed the nose of the aircraft across the runway hold line of runway 31L. I stopped the aircraft and waited for instructions from the ground controller. After a short wait; the ground controller gave clearance to cross runway 31L and taxi to runway 31C via taxiway. Better signage needs to be placed at the intersection of taxiway K and taxiway F to prevent such occurrences. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter verified that the airport in question was mdw even though that was not on the report. Pilot reported that they had the airport diagram out; but had not looked at it. After the incident; they reviewed the chart and realized the point of the missed taxiway transition was a hot spot.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: AN IAI 1125 PLT CONFUSED ABOUT TXWY LOCATIONS AT MDW INADVERTENTLY INCURRED THE RWY 31L HOLD SHORT ON TXWY K AT TXWY F; HOT SPOT 6.
Narrative: LEAVING THE FBO; WE WERE CLRED TO TAXI RWY 31C. AFTER TURNING ONTO TXWY K AND REACHING THE INTXN OF TXWY K AND TXWY F; I WAS CONFUSED AS TO WHICH WAY TO TAXI BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SIGN THAT INDICATED WHICH TXWY WAS TXWY F AND WHICH TXWY WAS TXWY K. WHILE TRYING TO ASCERTAIN WHICH WAY TO GO; I INADVERTENTLY PLACED THE NOSE OF THE ACFT ACROSS THE RWY HOLD LINE OF RWY 31L. I STOPPED THE ACFT AND WAITED FOR INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE GND CTLR. AFTER A SHORT WAIT; THE GND CTLR GAVE CLRNC TO CROSS RWY 31L AND TAXI TO RWY 31C VIA TXWY. BETTER SIGNAGE NEEDS TO BE PLACED AT THE INTXN OF TXWY K AND TXWY F TO PREVENT SUCH OCCURRENCES. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR VERIFIED THAT THE ARPT IN QUESTION WAS MDW EVEN THOUGH THAT WAS NOT ON THE RPT. PLT RPTED THAT THEY HAD THE ARPT DIAGRAM OUT; BUT HAD NOT LOOKED AT IT. AFTER THE INCIDENT; THEY REVIEWED THE CHART AND REALIZED THE POINT OF THE MISSED TXWY TRANSITION WAS A HOT SPOT.
