Narrative:
Right after takeoff the flight attendants called to report acrid smoke; getting thicker in the cabin. We could smell the smoke in the cockpit. I turned off both packs; declared an emergency and we did a 180 degree turn back to land on runway 22R at ZZZ. ATC was first rate; on the ball and helpful. Taxied clear; checked with the flight attendants; communicated with crash fire rescue equipment; returned to the gate. 6 mins air time.
