Narrative:
During preflight; I dropped a can of coke and it exploded inside the cockpit. There were several spray streams in different directions; with one of them spraying the copilot in the eyes. We spent anywhere from 10-15 min cleaning up the cockpit. After that; the cockpit preflight and the start and taxi out procedures were disrupted and we were playing catch-up! We also had to de-ice prior to leaving the ramp. During the preflight; the copilot got the clearance without me listening to the clearance. We had been cleared to 10000 ft for the departure. After the copilot received the clearance; I did not follow up and xchk the flight plan and the clearance. The copilot set 5000 ft into the window; or it had been set there prior to our arriving at the aircraft. We taxied out and departed. I leveled off at 5000 ft and we waited for departure (tower) to give us a climb. Tower called and asked if we had a problem due to us being cleared up to 10000 ft. The copilot said no and then informed me that we were cleared to 10000 ft; but that it had not been set into the window. We continued our climb to 10000 ft. Our normal cockpit preflight procedures and flows were interrupted with several non normal events. Supplemental information from acn 675976: something minor affected something important. Next time that there's a disruption; I'll make sure that I verify or brief the captain on the full departure clearance. I realize it's also easy to be fooled by habitual expectations (5000 ft on departure).
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B757 FLT CREW; DISRUPTED BY SPRAY FROM A CARBONATED BEVERAGE CAN; RUSHES TO COMPLETE AN ON-TIME DEP AND MISSES AN ALT CLRNC ON DEP.
Narrative: DURING PREFLT; I DROPPED A CAN OF COKE AND IT EXPLODED INSIDE THE COCKPIT. THERE WERE SEVERAL SPRAY STREAMS IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS; WITH ONE OF THEM SPRAYING THE COPLT IN THE EYES. WE SPENT ANYWHERE FROM 10-15 MIN CLEANING UP THE COCKPIT. AFTER THAT; THE COCKPIT PREFLT AND THE START AND TAXI OUT PROCS WERE DISRUPTED AND WE WERE PLAYING CATCH-UP! WE ALSO HAD TO DE-ICE PRIOR TO LEAVING THE RAMP. DURING THE PREFLT; THE COPLT GOT THE CLRNC WITHOUT ME LISTENING TO THE CLRNC. WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO 10000 FT FOR THE DEP. AFTER THE COPLT RECEIVED THE CLRNC; I DID NOT FOLLOW UP AND XCHK THE FLT PLAN AND THE CLRNC. THE COPLT SET 5000 FT INTO THE WINDOW; OR IT HAD BEEN SET THERE PRIOR TO OUR ARRIVING AT THE ACFT. WE TAXIED OUT AND DEPARTED. I LEVELED OFF AT 5000 FT AND WE WAITED FOR DEP (TWR) TO GIVE US A CLB. TWR CALLED AND ASKED IF WE HAD A PROB DUE TO US BEING CLRED UP TO 10000 FT. THE COPLT SAID NO AND THEN INFORMED ME THAT WE WERE CLRED TO 10000 FT; BUT THAT IT HAD NOT BEEN SET INTO THE WINDOW. WE CONTINUED OUR CLB TO 10000 FT. OUR NORMAL COCKPIT PREFLT PROCS AND FLOWS WERE INTERRUPTED WITH SEVERAL NON NORMAL EVENTS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 675976: SOMETHING MINOR AFFECTED SOMETHING IMPORTANT. NEXT TIME THAT THERE'S A DISRUPTION; I'LL MAKE SURE THAT I VERIFY OR BRIEF THE CAPT ON THE FULL DEP CLRNC. I REALIZE IT'S ALSO EASY TO BE FOOLED BY HABITUAL EXPECTATIONS (5000 FT ON DEP).
