Narrative:

Passing about FL180 on climb out; we got the #2 'bus off' and 'generator off bus' light on. We accomplished the 'loss of one generator bus' checklist. We turned on the APU and used it to power the #2 bus per checklist. Within about 1 min of finishing that; we got the #2 'overheat' light on and accomplished the engine overheat qrc. Pulling back the #2 throttle put the light out (we did not have to shut the engine down) and we finished with the reference action items. We declared an emergency; talked to dispatch; and decided ZZZ was the most suitable airport. I (PNF) did all the checklists and company communications. The first officer (PF) flew and landed very well and uneventfully. Dispatch; maintenance; and ATC were all helpful and gave us whatever we asked for.
