Narrative:
After takeoff on runway 17R at dfw on the clare 2 SID we had trouble engaging navigation. I was flying and the first officer finally was able to hook up navigation and we got navigation cap annunciated. The flight director indicated a left turn towards jolen and trexx had dropped off; as if we had passed the point. I turned the airplane following the flight director in a 30 degree bank to stay on track at 220 KTS. Departure control then called and asked if we were given direct clare. We said no; that we were turning toward jolen and appeared to us to be on track. He gave us traffic at 12 0'clock and had us level off at 9000 ft. We had a visual on the traffic and we never got a TA on the TCAS. We loaded the departure correctly and checked the waypoints and runway and verified this with queue. After the initial difficulty; the navigation tracked normally and the flight concluded uneventfully.

Narrative: AFTER TAKEOFF ON RWY 17R AT DFW ON THE CLARE 2 SID WE HAD TROUBLE ENGAGING NAV. I WAS FLYING AND THE FO FINALLY WAS ABLE TO HOOK UP NAV AND WE GOT NAV CAP ANNUNCIATED. THE FLT DIRECTOR INDICATED A L TURN TOWARDS JOLEN AND TREXX HAD DROPPED OFF; AS IF WE HAD PASSED THE POINT. I TURNED THE AIRPLANE FOLLOWING THE FLT DIRECTOR IN A 30 DEG BANK TO STAY ON TRACK AT 220 KTS. DEP CTL THEN CALLED AND ASKED IF WE WERE GIVEN DIRECT CLARE. WE SAID NO; THAT WE WERE TURNING TOWARD JOLEN AND APPEARED TO US TO BE ON TRACK. HE GAVE US TFC AT 12 0'CLOCK AND HAD US LEVEL OFF AT 9000 FT. WE HAD A VISUAL ON THE TFC AND WE NEVER GOT A TA ON THE TCAS. WE LOADED THE DEP CORRECTLY AND CHKED THE WAYPOINTS AND RWY AND VERIFIED THIS WITH QUEUE. AFTER THE INITIAL DIFFICULTY; THE NAV TRACKED NORMALLY AND THE FLT CONCLUDED UNEVENTFULLY.
