Narrative:

On a field trip at ZZZ; we may have installed the wrong cover on the left engine. The numbers we used did not reflect the modification on the part. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter stated the MD80 had the left engine fan bearing cover replaced. Later found incorrect fan bearing cover installed. The cover received from the maintenance facility was robbed from a svcable engine and the part number was not checked before sending it off line to the job. The identify for modified covers and unmodified covers is poor; as the modified cover numbers are added to the original part numbers with a paper sticker. Now the paper sticker is working in an oil environmental situation and does not last. Need engraving on modified covers. Wrong cover later replaced.
