Narrative:
Early in 2005; I attended the A320 class for the A320 family of aircraft; received simulator training and OJT training. That allowed me to work on the aircraft for air carrier X. In training; they said that the avionics afs and land verify test could be done by anyone. At the time; I was a mechanic. On sep/mon/05 line awarded an A1 avionics position. Since there was no avionics initial class; I assumed that now in the avionics department I was CAT qualified; but am not. I needed to go to a paperwork class to receive certification. I have been previously certified on several aircraft types that had avionics initial classes. In conversation about CAT signoffs; maintenance/auxiliary certification came up and recurrent training. During this time I found out about the paperwork class required for certification. Poor communication about policy led to this error. I will obviously seek the paperwork class; it has nothing to do with training or ability to do the work; so that I will be in compliance with the rules. This is not a safety issue; but compliance with the procedures. I regret the error and have every desire to abide by the rules.

Narrative: EARLY IN 2005; I ATTENDED THE A320 CLASS FOR THE A320 FAMILY OF ACFT; RECEIVED SIMULATOR TRAINING AND OJT TRAINING. THAT ALLOWED ME TO WORK ON THE ACFT FOR ACR X. IN TRAINING; THEY SAID THAT THE AVIONICS AFS AND LAND VERIFY TEST COULD BE DONE BY ANYONE. AT THE TIME; I WAS A MECH. ON SEP/MON/05 LINE AWARDED AN A1 AVIONICS POS. SINCE THERE WAS NO AVIONICS INITIAL CLASS; I ASSUMED THAT NOW IN THE AVIONICS DEPT I WAS CAT QUALIFIED; BUT AM NOT. I NEEDED TO GO TO A PAPERWORK CLASS TO RECEIVE CERTIFICATION. I HAVE BEEN PREVIOUSLY CERTIFIED ON SEVERAL ACFT TYPES THAT HAD AVIONICS INITIAL CLASSES. IN CONVERSATION ABOUT CAT SIGNOFFS; MAINT/AUX CERTIFICATION CAME UP AND RECURRENT TRAINING. DURING THIS TIME I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE PAPERWORK CLASS REQUIRED FOR CERTIFICATION. POOR COM ABOUT POLICY LED TO THIS ERROR. I WILL OBVIOUSLY SEEK THE PAPERWORK CLASS; IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH TRAINING OR ABILITY TO DO THE WORK; SO THAT I WILL BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE RULES. THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE; BUT COMPLIANCE WITH THE PROCS. I REGRET THE ERROR AND HAVE EVERY DESIRE TO ABIDE BY THE RULES.
