Narrative:

While departing runway 7 with maximum power-improved performance and bleeds off we heard a pop during rotate followed by a series of pops during climb out. Idented compressor stalls on #2 engine. Power was reduced to 81% N1 to try to clear with no effect. Power was further reduced with no effect. Reports from tower of engine fire. Engine fire/severe damage checklist accomplished in full. Single engine landing checklist completed. Single engine landing completed uneventfully on runway 7. Aircraft returned to gate.

Narrative: WHILE DEPARTING RWY 7 WITH MAX PWR-IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND BLEEDS OFF WE HEARD A POP DURING ROTATE FOLLOWED BY A SERIES OF POPS DURING CLBOUT. IDENTED COMPRESSOR STALLS ON #2 ENG. PWR WAS REDUCED TO 81% N1 TO TRY TO CLR WITH NO EFFECT. PWR WAS FURTHER REDUCED WITH NO EFFECT. RPTS FROM TWR OF ENG FIRE. ENG FIRE/SEVERE DAMAGE CHKLIST ACCOMPLISHED IN FULL. SINGLE ENG LNDG CHKLIST COMPLETED. SINGLE ENG LNDG COMPLETED UNEVENTFULLY ON RWY 7. ACFT RETURNED TO GATE.
