Narrative:
Rejected takeoff due to possible bird strike. The described event occurred within a 1-2 second timeframe. At 'rotate' call at approximately 105 KTS; both first officer and I spotted a large bird very close. First officer instinctively delayed rotation approximately 1 second to avoid hitting bird. First officer began rotation. I heard a thud as bird passed by. I elected to abort rotation. I elected to abort and called 'abort; my airplane.' transition was smooth. I turned off at A-6 intersection. 5500 ft used on 8009 ft runway (runway 16R) with discing; no reverse; minimal braking. My technical error was aborting at or slightly above V1/vr (V1 = vr). Subsequent departure; ATC queried whether or not we were airborne during the abort. They may have seen the nosewheel momentarily lift off.

Title: DHC-8 FLT CREW DURING TKOF ROLL HAS BIRD STRIKE AFTER V1 AND VR AND ELECT TO ABORT TKOF.
Narrative: REJECTED TKOF DUE TO POSSIBLE BIRD STRIKE. THE DESCRIBED EVENT OCCURRED WITHIN A 1-2 SECOND TIMEFRAME. AT 'ROTATE' CALL AT APPROX 105 KTS; BOTH FO AND I SPOTTED A LARGE BIRD VERY CLOSE. FO INSTINCTIVELY DELAYED ROTATION APPROX 1 SECOND TO AVOID HITTING BIRD. FO BEGAN ROTATION. I HEARD A THUD AS BIRD PASSED BY. I ELECTED TO ABORT ROTATION. I ELECTED TO ABORT AND CALLED 'ABORT; MY AIRPLANE.' TRANSITION WAS SMOOTH. I TURNED OFF AT A-6 INTXN. 5500 FT USED ON 8009 FT RWY (RWY 16R) WITH DISCING; NO REVERSE; MINIMAL BRAKING. MY TECHNICAL ERROR WAS ABORTING AT OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE V1/VR (V1 = VR). SUBSEQUENT DEP; ATC QUERIED WHETHER OR NOT WE WERE AIRBORNE DURING THE ABORT. THEY MAY HAVE SEEN THE NOSEWHEEL MOMENTARILY LIFT OFF.
