Narrative:
Approaching FAF; I called for gear down. First officer lowered the gear handle and we heard noise associated with the gear lowering. However; the red nose gear light was the only light to illuminate. It stayed illuminated and we accomplished a low approach and notified tower. Fuel at that time was about 5000 pounds. We flew a box pattern and did a low approach over the runway (200 ft AGL) and emergency crews confirmed they saw all the gear were down. First officer accomplished alternate gear extension checklist and visually confirmed all 3 gear were down (we flew one more approach over the runway at 1000 ft AGL) while the first officer accomplished these procedures. We then accomplished a visual approach and landing; shut down the engines (started the APU in the air). Supplemental information from acn 690084: I visually verified all 3 gear were down.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: B737-300 FLT CREW DURING FINAL APCH HAS FALSE GEAR INDICATION. FLT CREW PERFORMS THE QRH PROCS AND VERIFIES GEAR DOWN AND LOCKED.
Narrative: APCHING FAF; I CALLED FOR GEAR DOWN. FO LOWERED THE GEAR HANDLE AND WE HEARD NOISE ASSOCIATED WITH THE GEAR LOWERING. HOWEVER; THE RED NOSE GEAR LIGHT WAS THE ONLY LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE. IT STAYED ILLUMINATED AND WE ACCOMPLISHED A LOW APCH AND NOTIFIED TWR. FUEL AT THAT TIME WAS ABOUT 5000 LBS. WE FLEW A BOX PATTERN AND DID A LOW APCH OVER THE RWY (200 FT AGL) AND EMER CREWS CONFIRMED THEY SAW ALL THE GEAR WERE DOWN. FO ACCOMPLISHED ALTERNATE GEAR EXTENSION CHKLIST AND VISUALLY CONFIRMED ALL 3 GEAR WERE DOWN (WE FLEW ONE MORE APCH OVER THE RWY AT 1000 FT AGL) WHILE THE FO ACCOMPLISHED THESE PROCS. WE THEN ACCOMPLISHED A VISUAL APCH AND LNDG; SHUT DOWN THE ENGS (STARTED THE APU IN THE AIR). SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 690084: I VISUALLY VERIFIED ALL 3 GEAR WERE DOWN.
