Narrative:
Prior to takeoff we noticed that the left generator was not online and the field was open. We contacted maintenance and he advised us to shut down/restart the left engine to verify that the left generator would come online automatically. We accomplished this and found that the generator field tripped at about 50% N1 and the generator did not come online. Maintenance advised us to disconnect the left generator idg and continue with the left generator deferred inoperative. The APU was working normally. After takeoff; climbing out of approximately FL305; the APU faulted and shut down. We attempted to restart the APU and it came online for 20 seconds and then faulted and shut down again. We advised ZZZ center that we had an electrical problem; declared an emergency and requested a return to ZZZ. We received a clearance for a right turn direct ZZZ and proceeded to an uneventful landing.
