Narrative:
Ord tower cleared a B747 for takeoff on runway 14R while we were on final for runway 4R. We initiated s-turn to the right for space. When below 1000 ft AGL; ord tower initiated go around with these instructions: 'go around; climb as fast as possible and turn left to stay above and behind the B747.' we had to ask for altitude and heading information during the go around maneuver while trying to maintain visual separation from the departing B747. Although it appeared that separation was maintained; the situation was made more difficult by the controller's vague instructions. The remainder of the flight was normal. I was able to contact the ord tower by phone after we landed. Ord tower explained that the controller was new on the job and he would be counseled regarding the incident.

Title: B757 FLT CREW ON FINAL APCH IS REQUIRED TO EXECUTE A GAR TO AVOID ANOTHER ACFT ON TKOF FROM AN INTERSECTING RWY.
Narrative: ORD TWR CLRED A B747 FOR TKOF ON RWY 14R WHILE WE WERE ON FINAL FOR RWY 4R. WE INITIATED S-TURN TO THE R FOR SPACE. WHEN BELOW 1000 FT AGL; ORD TWR INITIATED GAR WITH THESE INSTRUCTIONS: 'GO AROUND; CLB AS FAST AS POSSIBLE AND TURN L TO STAY ABOVE AND BEHIND THE B747.' WE HAD TO ASK FOR ALT AND HDG INFO DURING THE GAR MANEUVER WHILE TRYING TO MAINTAIN VISUAL SEPARATION FROM THE DEPARTING B747. ALTHOUGH IT APPEARED THAT SEPARATION WAS MAINTAINED; THE SITUATION WAS MADE MORE DIFFICULT BY THE CTLR'S VAGUE INSTRUCTIONS. THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT WAS NORMAL. I WAS ABLE TO CONTACT THE ORD TWR BY PHONE AFTER WE LANDED. ORD TWR EXPLAINED THAT THE CTLR WAS NEW ON THE JOB AND HE WOULD BE COUNSELED REGARDING THE INCIDENT.
