Narrative:
Upon taxi out from the gate at sfo on taxiway a; sfo ground informed us that we had a later wheels-up time for lax. We asked if he needed us to pull over somewhere to wait and he said;' continue on taxiway F and wait in the holding pad for runway 28!' when we got there; the run-up area was depicted as 2 solid yellow lines and green paint then the rest of the pad. It did not look like what was depicted on the 10-9 and the fom legends section. In order to have other airplanes taxi around us; we entered the run-up pad as directed. The 10-9 shows the holding pad; ground control said it was a holding pad; but it wasn't marked properly. We should have just asked the controller again if that pad was stressed for a B757. There were visible signs of other airplane wheel trucks in that area. We were able to taxi out with no problem and no damage to the airplane. It was confusing.
