Narrative:
Departed teb runway 24 for the teb 5 departure. Turned 'on' autoplt at approximately 400 ft AGL (400 ft MSL). With the airspeed and altitude set to level off at 1500 ft MSL and airspeed set at 180 KTS; the autoplt did not level at 1500 ft MSL; but instead when through the altitude to 1750 ft MSL and then descended to 1500 ft MSL. In the future; I will 'hand fly' the airplane on the SID until the airplane is in a stabilized condition (on heading; on airspeed; and on altitude). No conflict with any other aircraft occurred and the controller did not comment on the altitude deviation.
