Narrative:
Prior to acceptance of aircraft; maintenance replaced a brake on the left main gear. During the preflight; the first officer missed a metal piece used by maintenance that was attached to the left main strut. I looked at the gear prior to leaving the ramp from the front of the aircraft and did not notice the metal piece (the piece of metal was painted a baby blue and this blended well with the gray of the strut. After getting airborne the main gear would not retract properly (the piece of metal was attached on the uplock). Cycled the gear once; still could not get a positive gear retraction. We then extended the landing gear and leveled off at 2000 ft to return for a normal visual approach and landing. The piece of metal fell after clearing the runway but prior to reaching our hangar. The piece of metal is now painted a bright red and has a flag attached to it.
