Narrative:

While being vectored after departure we were instructed to climb from 8000 ft to 9000 ft and given a left turn to a 090 degree heading which I read back to the controller. This put is in conflict with an airliner being vectored for an approach that was descending to 9000 ft. The pilot flying saw the other aircraft and was beginning to stop the climb when we got an RA on the other aircraft; which we reported to the controller. En route we were asked to call the approach facility when we got to our destination. When the pilot who was flying called the supervisor; he was informed that it was in fact a controller error and that we had in fact done as we were instructed.
