Narrative:
I landed on a taxiway parallel to the active runway 17. It was a beautiful end of day at about dusk. I had departed mdw and had dropped off my colleague at ack and had then headed to owd. A mooney was on final as I was on left downwind so the tower asked me to extend. I did so and thought it was a great opportunity to really focus on a perfect landing since the wind was 30 degrees off the runway gusting to 18-20 KTS. I stabilized perfectly on the VASI and at perfect speed. As I was about to land; I realized I was not lined up on the runway but on the parallel taxiway. The landing was perfect; but on the wrong surface. As I consider the likely causes; I list the following possible contributing factors: 1) I was a bit tired since I had come from 2 meetings in chicago; but I'd be surprised if this was really seminal to the mistake. 2) I had not yet had dinner so I was getting a little hungry. A combination of #1 and #2 might have been a contributor. 3) my flight director had behaved a bit oddly on my flying time; so I was considering possible sources of the possible problem. 4) I was very focused on speed and pitch control; trying to really grease a perfect crosswind landing. 5) although this is my home airport; we rarely land on runway 17 and the VASI is on the right side of the runway; not the more usual left. I think I slipped into the comfort of having the VASI on the left side of the landing surface while focusing intently and this set me up to land on the taxiway parallel to runway 17; on its right. Making this mistake seems incredible to me and yet it occurred. I must reincorporate a more stringent visual identify of the correct landing surface in my final 'before landing' checklist.

I THINK I SLIPPED INTO THE COMFORT OF HAVING THE VASI ON THE L SIDE OF THE LNDG SURFACE WHILE FOCUSING INTENTLY AND THIS SET ME UP TO LAND ON THE TXWY PARALLEL TO RWY 17; ON ITS RIGHT. MAKING THIS MISTAKE SEEMS INCREDIBLE TO ME AND YET IT OCCURRED. I MUST REINCORPORATE A MORE STRINGENT VISUAL IDENT OF THE CORRECT LNDG SURFACE IN MY FINAL 'BEFORE LNDG' CHKLIST.
