Narrative:

My hangar is on west end of airport and while starting up I listened to ASOS. The report was wind at 010 degrees at 6 KTS. I taxied to runway 12 and noticed the windsock had shifted southwest and a plane was taking off on runway 30 (5500 ft runway). With no reported traffic on radio (monitoring 122.7) I decided to practice a high speed taxi on mains (7GCBC is a tail-dragger) on main taxiway. Wind was a quartering tailwind with no flaps; I tried to maintain a speed below 'to' range. Just past midway; I was starting to get light on mains and started to pull power. Just at that time; a helicopter training announced it was on final for parallel taxiway runway 30. Although we had plenty of separation; for me to slow down; it meant the helicopter would have to extend his touchdown point. With the present momentum I decided the best plan of action was to apply power and take off from taxiway. This precluded a conflict with separation. No other traffic was reporting for departure or arrival. Analysis -- I probably should not have been trying to practice a high-speed taxi on taxiway; retrospectively; I should have announced my intentions and practiced on the runway. Second; I did not maintain adequate speed control otherwise; I would not have been light on the mains. Third; I did maintain situational awareness in regards to the helicopter traffic that train at eul and use the parallel taxiway as their runway.

Title: BELLANCA 7GCBC PVT PLT AT EUL ATTEMPTS A HIGH-SPD TAXI ON A TXWY AND SUBSEQUENTLY TAKES OFF.

Narrative: MY HANGAR IS ON W END OF ARPT AND WHILE STARTING UP I LISTENED TO ASOS. THE RPT WAS WIND AT 010 DEGS AT 6 KTS. I TAXIED TO RWY 12 AND NOTICED THE WINDSOCK HAD SHIFTED SW AND A PLANE WAS TAKING OFF ON RWY 30 (5500 FT RWY). WITH NO RPTED TFC ON RADIO (MONITORING 122.7) I DECIDED TO PRACTICE A HIGH SPD TAXI ON MAINS (7GCBC IS A TAIL-DRAGGER) ON MAIN TXWY. WIND WAS A QUARTERING TAILWIND WITH NO FLAPS; I TRIED TO MAINTAIN A SPD BELOW 'TO' RANGE. JUST PAST MIDWAY; I WAS STARTING TO GET LIGHT ON MAINS AND STARTED TO PULL PWR. JUST AT THAT TIME; A HELI TRAINING ANNOUNCED IT WAS ON FINAL FOR PARALLEL TXWY RWY 30. ALTHOUGH WE HAD PLENTY OF SEPARATION; FOR ME TO SLOW DOWN; IT MEANT THE HELI WOULD HAVE TO EXTEND HIS TOUCHDOWN POINT. WITH THE PRESENT MOMENTUM I DECIDED THE BEST PLAN OF ACTION WAS TO APPLY PWR AND TAKE OFF FROM TXWY. THIS PRECLUDED A CONFLICT WITH SEPARATION. NO OTHER TFC WAS RPTING FOR DEP OR ARR. ANALYSIS -- I PROBABLY SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TRYING TO PRACTICE A HIGH-SPD TAXI ON TXWY; RETROSPECTIVELY; I SHOULD HAVE ANNOUNCED MY INTENTIONS AND PRACTICED ON THE RWY. SECOND; I DID NOT MAINTAIN ADEQUATE SPD CTL OTHERWISE; I WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN LIGHT ON THE MAINS. THIRD; I DID MAINTAIN SITUATIONAL AWARENESS IN REGARDS TO THE HELI TFC THAT TRAIN AT EUL AND USE THE PARALLEL TXWY AS THEIR RWY.
