Narrative:

Instructed to 'follow crj off you left on hotel; taxi hotel; H5; hold short of runway 34R/16L.' we were in line behind the one crj; both of us holding short of 34R/16L at H5. Traffic landing runway 34R cleared. Instructed to 'follow crj ahead; taxi to runway 35; Q; back taxi runway 32/14.' approximately half way down back-taxi; we saw the crj ahead going into position on runway 35. Approximately 4000 ft down the back-taxi on runway 14/32 heading south; the crj was still holding in position. At 500 ft remaining I stated to apply brake pressure as approaching the south end of runway 14/32; in anticipation of holding short after a slight turn eastward at runway 35. I started scanning for the hold short line ahead. However; the hold short line came into view approximately 50 ft ahead. As my brain processed that this hold short on runway 14.32; some 200 plus ft from runway 35; was oriented correctly to be our hold short line for runway 35; I applied full brakes prior to passing the hold short line. Unfortunately our momentum carried the front two thirds of the airplane past the hold short line. Stunned; I confirmed with the first officer that the lines were actually oriented correctly and that the front of the part of the aircraft had in fact passed the hold short line for runway 35. We were still a couple hundred feet from the end of runway 35 and in no danger of conflicting with any of the runway traffic. We were then cleared into position and departed. We were so far from the runway that there was never any question that we were very clear of any possible conflict with any other aircraft. The times and distances above are approximate. I don't know how far the hold short line or runway 14/32 actually is from the end of runway 35; but it seemed like around two to three hundred feet. In any case; it was far enough that it took me completely by surprise. At first I thought this grouping of lines was the hold short line for runway 14/32 and anticipated it to be broken on our side and solid on the other side.

Title: EMB170 FLT CREW HAS A RWY INCURSION AT SLC.

Narrative: INSTRUCTED TO 'FOLLOW CRJ OFF YOU LEFT ON HOTEL; TAXI HOTEL; H5; HOLD SHORT OF RWY 34R/16L.' WE WERE IN LINE BEHIND THE ONE CRJ; BOTH OF US HOLDING SHORT OF 34R/16L AT H5. TRAFFIC LANDING RWY 34R CLEARED. INSTRUCTED TO 'FOLLOW CRJ AHEAD; TAXI TO RWY 35; Q; BACK TAXI RWY 32/14.' APPROX HALF WAY DOWN BACK-TAXI; WE SAW THE CRJ AHEAD GOING INTO POSITION ON RWY 35. APPROX 4000 FT DOWN THE BACK-TAXI ON RWY 14/32 HEADING SOUTH; THE CRJ WAS STILL HOLDING IN POSITION. AT 500 FT REMAINING I STATED TO APPLY BRAKE PRESSURE AS APPROACHING THE S END OF RWY 14/32; IN ANTICIPATION OF HOLDING SHORT AFTER A SLIGHT TURN EASTWARD AT RWY 35. I STARTED SCANNING FOR THE HOLD SHORT LINE AHEAD. HOWEVER; THE HOLD SHORT LINE CAME INTO VIEW APPROX 50 FT AHEAD. AS MY BRAIN PROCESSED THAT THIS HOLD SHORT ON RWY 14.32; SOME 200 PLUS FT FROM RWY 35; WAS ORIENTED CORRECTLY TO BE OUR HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 35; I APPLIED FULL BRAKES PRIOR TO PASSING THE HOLD SHORT LINE. UNFORTUNATELY OUR MOMENTUM CARRIED THE FRONT TWO THIRDS OF THE AIRPLANE PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE. STUNNED; I CONFIRMED WITH THE FO THAT THE LINES WERE ACTUALLY ORIENTED CORRECTLY AND THAT THE FRONT OF THE PART OF THE ACFT HAD IN FACT PASSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 35. WE WERE STILL A COUPLE HUNDRED FEET FROM THE END OF RWY 35 AND IN NO DANGER OF CONFLICTING WITH ANY OF THE RWY TRAFFIC. WE WERE THEN CLEARED INTO POSITION AND DEPARTED. WE WERE SO FAR FROM THE RWY THAT THERE WAS NEVER ANY QUESTION THAT WE WERE VERY CLEAR OF ANY POSSIBLE CONFLICT WITH ANY OTHER ACFT. THE TIMES AND DISTANCES ABOVE ARE APPROXIMATE. I DON'T KNOW HOW FAR THE HOLD SHORT LINE OR RWY 14/32 ACTUALLY IS FROM THE END OF RWY 35; BUT IT SEEMED LIKE AROUND TWO TO THREE HUNDRED FEET. IN ANY CASE; IT WAS FAR ENOUGH THAT IT TOOK ME COMPLETELY BY SURPRISE. AT FIRST I THOUGHT THIS GROUPING OF LINES WAS THE HOLD SHORT LINE FOR RWY 14/32 AND ANTICIPATED IT TO BE BROKEN ON OUR SIDE AND SOLID ON THE OTHER SIDE.
